United battling with City for Sanchez
By Margaret Nongo-Okojokwu

Alexis Sanchez's eye for goal and creative skills are attracting interest

After all the speculation on Tuesday suggested Manchester City had moved into pole position to sign highly-rated Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez, reports on Wednesday say Manchester United chief executive David Gill has held talks with the Serie A club.
According to The Sun, Gill flew out to meet with Udinese owner Gianpaolo Pozzo in Barcelona, where he lives, in a bid to thrash out a deal for a player who is also being tracked by Barcelona and Inter Milan.
There are conflicting reports concerning how much it will cost to secure the services of the Chile international, with a figure between £35 million and £44 million in the press. City are thought to be prepared to pay no more than £27 million, which may mean Udinese have to reach a compromise with one of the player's other suitors.
After Pozzo stated on Tuesday that City were favourites, due to the spending power of clubs in the Premier League, the 22-year-old's agent, Fernando Felicevich, said: "An agreement with City? Sanchez's future is still very much wide open.
"We are working on it and, after meetings with City, we have other new appointments."

Appeal court sacks Delta speaker

Newly elected speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Ochei, has been sacked by the Court of Appeal in Asaba, saying he was not the rightful candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Aniocha North in the election of April 2007. The Court dismissed the appeal filed by Mr. Ochei in October 2007 and resolved the case in favour of Mr. Boniface Isichei.
Mr. Isichei in the initial suit No FHC/ABJ/CS/22/07 before the Federal High Court challenged the substitution of his name by the PDP with that of Mr. Ochei as candidate after he won the primary election, thus emerging as the party’s candidate for Aniocha North in the April 2007 polls.
The Federal High Court in its judgment declared the substitution as illegal and restrained the PDP and INEC from presenting or recognizing Mr. Ochei as candidate for Aniocha North for the House of Assembly polls due for April 2007. But following the judgment, Mr. Ochei filed an appeal on May 25, 2007, challenging it on 15 grounds. Among the grounds were the procedure for the trial, violation of the right to fair hearing and jurisdiction of the lower court.
In its lead judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, the Court of Appeal noted that the core question of Mr. Isichei’s case before the High Court was whether the letter of his substitution complied with the law. The Court of Appeal held that the Federal High Court was right in ruling in Mr. Isichei’s favour and that he was the rightful candidate of the PDP for the said election in April 2007. According to the court, there was no merit in the points canvassed by the appellant (Mr. Ochei) and therefore dismissed the appeal.
